Waxing a car. leaving spots?

i tried waxing my car by hand and is leaving behind spots. to try and give an example its cleaning well and you could see the real shiny spots, but it looks horrrible. i went and kept going over the spots and can seem to get it all.. what should i do. should i use a machine instead?
